Julian Barnes wins Man Booker Prize

English author and bookmakers' favourite Julian Barnes finally won the Man Booker Prize for fiction. He was rewarded for his sensational novel 'The sense of an Ending', which at 150 pages was described by  reviews as a "novella".

Julian Barnes
It was his fourth time on the Booker shortlist -- Barnes was previously nominated for "Flaubert's Parrot" in 1984, "England, England" in 1998 and "Arthur and George" in 2005.

His book has been created a wide recognition among readers.According to one reviewer ,"It's one of these books, a very readable book, if I may use that word, but readable not only once but twice and even three times."

Barnes, who has been critical of the prize in the past, said he was relieved to have won at the fourth attempt. This year Barnes was up against Carol Birch for "Jamrach's Menagerie", Canadian authors Patrick deWitt and Esi Edugyan for "The Sisters Brothers" and "Half Blood Blues" respectively, and
debut British novelists Stephen Kelman ("Pigeon English") and A.D. Miller ("Snowdrops").

In his acceptance speech at a glitzy awards ceremony in London's medieval Guildhall, he said with overwhelming emotions ,"And at times over the last years, in occasional moments of mild paranoia, I wondered whether there wasn't perhaps some similar sister organisation operating over here.  "So I am as much relieved as I am delighted to receive the 2011 Booker Prize."

The Sense of an Ending, published by Random House, tells the story of Tony, a seemingly ordinary man who discovers that his memories are not as reliable as he thought.

Google App offers 3-D view of proton collison

Google with another miraculous application.A free new app on Google Android phones and tablets helps users view colliding protons in real time and 3D within the particle accelerator used by scientists carrying out work under the mountains on the French-Swiss border.

The app allows you to 'build' a 3D view
of the reactions inside the LHC
The app, created by an Oxford team led by physicist Alan Barr and endorsed by CERN, Geneva, which operates the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), has already been downloaded more than 10,000 times.

Naturally, it can't capture everything -the LHC produces gigabytes of data every second - but the view offers an exhilarating insight into 'Big Science' .It offers the chance to explore different parts of the detector and learn about the reactions it's looking for.

According to Barr 'For ages, I'd been thinking that with the amazing capabilities on modern smartphones we really ought to be able to make a really great app - something that would allow everybody to access the LHC data,'

Google Buzz to be shut down

Adios to Google Buzz ! Google announced to shut down the highly-controversial social networking product Google Buzz, along with several other services in the coming weeks.Launched in February 2010, Google Buzz was initially seen as a threat to Twitter and Facebook, but never lived up to its promise, becoming one of the biggest flops of the year.

Google on its official blog, Google announced the death penalty to its code search engine, Buzz, Jaiku which let users send updates to friends, the Google personalised homepage feature iGoogle.

The shut-downs came as part of Google's housecleaning effort announced in early September, in which the company said it will shut down a number of products and merging others into existing products as features.

'Changing the world takes focus on the future, and honesty about the past. We learned a lot from products like Buzz, and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision for products like Google+. Our users expect great things from us; today's announcements let us focus even more on giving them something truly awesome,' said Google in the blog post.

Google Buzz, a social networking and messaging tool integrated into Gmail service, has been widely criticised for privacy concerns and held back the search giant from expanding its businesses to the social networking space.

After Buzz, Google launched Google+ in June, which has been receiving a good response and passed the 40 million user mark. It is likely that Buzz will be viewed as a forerunner to Google+.Lets hope its followers would not have fate as its.

Beware of iPhones ! It could spy on you.

A word of caution for iPhone users. It could spy on what you type. The iPhone 4 is so sensitive that it can decode what exactly is being typed on a computer keyboard and can double up as a spy phone.Hackers may be able to spy on your keystrokes if you keep your iPhone  too close to your computer, a group of researchers reported .

A bunch of geeks from Georgia Institute of Technology came up with it by experimenting using smartphone accelerometer - the internal device that detects when and how the phone is tilted. They have ascertained that it can be harnessed to sense keyboard vibrations and decipher complete sentences with up to 80 percent accuracy, and the iPhone is easily vulnerable to it.

According to Patrick Traynor ,the lead of research team ,"We first tried our experiments with an iPhone 3GS, and the results were difficult to read," .

"But then we tried an iPhone 4, which has an added gyroscope to clean up the accelerometer noise, and the results were much better. We believe that most smartphones made in the past two years are sophisticated enough to launch this attack."

The  hacking technique makes use of a  mathematical software based on highly complex algorithms that can detect pairs of keystrokes, rather than individual letters. And it reveals that no technology can be false proof.

    See-Through-Wall Technology

Ever thought of being able to peer through neighbours thick wall ? Well, its not unlikely anymore. Thanks to a new cutting edge technology developed by scientists, for making it is no longer science fiction but reality.Brilliant minds from MIT's Lincoln Lab, Gregory Charvat and John Peabody have built a system that can see through walls from some distance away and it can give instantaneous pictures of the what-is-happening on the other side.

The device design consists of  unassuming array of antenna arranged in two rows - eight receiving elements on top, 13 transmitting ones below - and some computing equipment, all mounted onto a movable cart. It can sneak upon solid walls, that's certainly true of the four- and eight-inch-thick concrete walls on which the researchers tested their system.

It can prove worth utile for applications like military operations, especially "urban combat situations", says project leader Charvat according to a Lincoln Lab statement.

At first, their radar functions as any other: Transmitters emit waves of a certain frequency in the direction of the target. But in this case, each time the waves hit the wall, the concrete blocks more than 99 per cent of them from passing through. And that's only half the battle. Once the waves bounce off any targets, they must pass back through the wall to reach the radar's receivers - and again, 99 per cent don't make it. By the time it hits the receivers, the signal is reduced to about 0.0025 per cent of its original strength.According to Charvat, Cheap signal amplifiers can used to mitigate signal losses from the wall and major challenge before them was achieving the speed, resolution and range necessary to be useful in real time.

The Lincoln Lab team's system may be used at a range of up to 60 feet away from the wall. And, it gives a real-time picture of movement behind the wall in the form of a video at the rate of 10.8 frames per second.

Literally ,it's been true that Technology is pacing beyond walls. And be cautious of your neighbours !

A turn consists of moving the coin on the top to a position i below the top coin (0 = i = 20). We will call this an i-move (thus a 0-move implies doing nothing). The proviso is that an i-move cannot be repeated; for example once a player makes a 2- move, on subsequent turns neither player can make a 2-move. If the gold coin happens to be on top when it's a player's turn then the player wins the
